In 2002 the Landmarks Foundation entered fifty local buildings into the Ohio Historical Inventory. The identification and evaluation of an area’s archeological, architectural and historical resources are basic to the preservation of its cultural heritage. According to the Ohio History Connection website, “The Ohio survey and inventory programs have been underway for more than fifty years. Since that time, tens of thousands of architectural property and archeological sites have been documented and added to the state inventories, most often through the completion of surveys.”
The State Historic Preservation office has very specific guidelines for the information that is required for the completion of the architectural survey report. To satisfy those guidelines Landmarks Foundation hired Judy Williams, a preservation consultant, who met the federal professional qualification standards, to assist with our first fifty local building submitted to the Ohio Historical Inventory. Ms. Williams is a architectural historian, holding a BA from Ohio Wesleyan University and a MA from Boston University. Our fifty entries into the Ohio Historical Inventory represents the largest number provided in one area of the state.
To compliment the Inventory of the historic buildings in our community, the Landmarks Foundation has compiled a “Century List” of buildings that are at least 100 years old. Volunteers are needed to help expand that list.
